Engaged Encounter
Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Engaged Encounter Weekend?

Engaged Encounter is an investment in the future - a weekend experience in which an atmosphere is created that enables each couple to concentrate exclusively on one another while free of the pressures and interruptions of daily life. However,
this weekend is not a recreational retreat. It is a program designed to give each couple an opportunity to discuss honestly with their fiance', in a face-to-face manner, their strengths and weaknesses, desires, ambitions, goals, their attitudes about money, sex, family, their role in the church and in society.

Does this program meet any of the Phoenix Diocese requirements for Marriage Prep?

Yes. Our weekend satisfies Step 3: Married Life Skills Workshop. You will be given a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the weekend.

What Happens on a Weekend?

Through a series of talks presented by teams of married couples and sometimes a priest, the engaged couples are stimulated to dialogue privately on all aspects of married life, always from the viewpoint of their own relationship. Couples are given the opportunity to question examine and deepen their relationship with each other. Through a series of writing and sharing exercises, the couples are challenged to explore many aspects of their relationship in a much more deeper more honest way then they may have before. Personal reflection and dialogue are the main emphasis of the weekend with the exception of meals and a few groups activities.

What is the cost of the weekend?

We offer two cost options that fit your budget and your schedule:
$135.00 for Course+Meals+Materials (commuter weekend) - or-
$225.00 for Course+Meals+Materials+1 overnight stay (Overnight weekend)
It is recommended that you register online 2-3 months prior to your desired weekend to ensure your date.

NOTE: We offer a 10% discount for ALL active Military personnel!!! Thank you for Serving our country!!!
*A military Email address must be used during the registration process and contact must be made with our Local Coordinators to activate this discount.

Do we have to stay the entire weekend?

Yes...the weekend begins with Registration at 7:30AM on Saturday and ends Sunday afternoon about 4:00 p.m. It is designed to build upon each presentation. It is not designed like other programs out there than span across multiple days\weeks where you tend to loose focus on each other.
Please arrange your schedule accordingly and select a weekend in which you can make this full commitment.

Do we have to be Catholic?

Although the weekend is designed for couples planning to be married in the Catholic Church, it is open to all couples of any faith. It has been found to be both beneficial and supporting of couples from differing faith backgrounds.

How soon before the wedding should we attend our weekend?

Although we are called Engaged Encounter, a couple does not need to be actually "engaged" to attend a weekend. We recommend the "earlier the better". As soon as you are engaged, or even considering engagement that is the right time to attend a weekend. By attending early in your relationship you can discover areas of growth necessary in your relationship, determine if engagement and marriage is right for you at this time (before becoming too invested in the wedding preparations), and avoid the last minute hassles of attending a weekend while trying to do everything else your wedding day entails.

Why should we attend this weekend over any other program?

Catholic Engaged Encounter is the ONLY marriage preparation program offered in the Phoenix metropolitan area that it recognized and authorized by many Catholic Dioceses across the world. What this means is that if you both are going to school in Phoenix and are getting married in St. Paul, Minn, you can attend our program in Phoenix instead of flying back to St. Paul. How cool is that? Further it is not designed like other programs that span across multiple days\weeks where you tend to loose focus on each other. Everything happens in one weekend!!!

How will attending an Engaged Encounter Weekend enhance our marriage?

The weekend experience offers each couple the insights, the tools and the confidence to enrich their relationship and strengthen their love for one another. They learn that good marriages don't just happen. They must be developed.
For many couples, this weekend is one of the most significant experiences of their courtship. The encounter weekend teaches a communication technique which permits each couple to explore important areas of their
relationship in a spirit of love and understanding. By continuing the newly-acquired technique begun on the weekend,
husbands and wives continually grow closer together to live more joyful and purposeful lives. While not an essential part of the experience, the availability of a community of others who have shared the Weekend and who share similar values provides a supportive environment for even further growth.

What should we pack or wear?

Weekend dress code is comfortable casual. We do attend mass at a local chapel on Sunday.
If you are staying the weekend with us overnight, separate sleeping facilities are provided for men and women on campus. Pack separately and bring a robe as the facility is "dormitory" style for sleeping and showering.
Depending on where you register for your weekend (Phoenix or Tucson) bedding may or may not be provided.
Regardless, upon registering, you will be sent a confirmation letter explaining further details on what to pack and bring.

If we cant afford the weekend, do you offer scholarship?

Yes. Under certain circumstances (evaluated on a case-by-case basis) we work with you and your parish to come up with a budget figure that is acceptable. If this is required for you, please send an email to our Local Coordinators for assistance prior to you registration.

Do you have a program for Spanish?

Yes. In Phoenix, we do have a Spanish Program. This program is reserved for those that speak Spanish and coincide with the same weekend dates as the English program.

What if one of your weekends does not fit our schedule, are their other EE Weekends in Arizona to attend?

While there are other Marriage preparation program out there, we think ours is the very best and has been around longer than most of us have been alive!!! We would like you to attend one of our weekends. We suggest you look at Tucson dates or even perhaps dates elsewhere where travel wouldn't be a burden.
